Organizing Resolutions for 2009

Are you ready for a new year? In just a few days, we will ring in 2009 and start with  fresh, clean slate. While it’s an annual ritual many people to make, and then break, resolutions, it’s still helpful to reflect on past experiences and find new ways to improve our lives so we can be happier and healthier. If one of your goals is to be more organized and less hampered by clutter, here are a few resolutions for you:

  • Designate a place for everything that comes into your house. Mail, keys, grocery bags, coats, mittens, hats, shoes, and everything in between.
  • Make a “one in, one out” rule for clothes, furniture, and small appliances and household items. If you bring home something new, get rid of the old by donating items in good condition or tossing things that are broken or damaged. Remember that some organizations will accept damaged items that can be easily repaired.
  • Stop thinking, “I might need it someday.” Chances are, if you do actually need it some day, you won’t be able to find it when the time comes.  If it is still in good shape, give it to someone who can use it or donate it to a local charity. Otherwise, throw it away.
  • Shred or recycle junk mail as it arrives. Don’t let it collect on your counter or desk. When you open bills and other mail, toss or recycle the inserts. Keep only the most important pieces of paper and the return envelope.
  • Help you kids sort through their toys and books. Now that they have new items from the Christmas holidays, encourage them to choose some toys and books that they are no longer interested in and give them to a kid’s charity.
  • Collect all of your 2008 files and paperwork and secure it in a Banker’s box or other convenient container. Refill your filing cabinet with 2009 folders and commit to filing on a regular basis.

What are your 2009 organizing resolutions? Do you have any tips or ideas to add to the list? I’d love to hear them, so leave a comment and pass them on!
